Diplomacy is the art and practice of managing relations between states and other international actors, which can be a challenge given the complexities of contemporary international relations. Ideally speaking, though, the varied tools of diplomacy help actors articulate their political interests and implement policy goals with an eye toward keeping the world running as smoothly as possible. With that in mind, this course looks at the what, why, and how of diplomacy, addressing in the process a variety of attendant issues including trade, the environment, security, foreign policy, and regional politics.
