This assignment asks you to present a distinctively personal response to assigned textbook chapters, in two separate papers. There are many ways to appropriately engage course material in these papers; but essentially, you can discuss anything of interest to you as long as you do the following:
Your task is to think about what you read in each assigned chapter, sort it out in a (new) way that makes sense (or is useful) to you, and offer your personal take on the material. With that in mind:
Use only assigned readings (as listed on the syllabus), classroom material (including your notes), and your own ideas (or personal experiences) for this assignment. Using other ("outside") sources constitutes cheating and could subject you to disciplinary action.
Your paper must be typewritten and double–spaced, use a single standard font with 1–1¼" margins throughout, and include a (typed) word count.
Citations must be employed as needed and conform fully to the author–date style described in Chapters 18-19 of Turabian's Manual for Writers. (You'll need to properly include, place, and style all the required information—exactly as detailed in Turabian's Manual.) Papers submitted with improperly formatted citations will receive a score reduction of up to 10 points.
Email me each paper as a PDF file attachment, sent from your Oswego email account, before 3:30 p.m. on the date your subject chapter is listed on the syllabus (as indicated below). Name each file attachment "201 Paper x Surname" (substituting the paper number for "x" and your own last name for "Surname"). I'll only accept papers in PDF format; papers submitted in any other format may be refused and assigned a score of zero.
To receive a grade of A or A– on this assignment, the quality of your content and presentation must be outstanding. By definition, A–range content must be demonstrably more well informed, thoughtfully considered, and analytically sophisticated than above average (B–range) or average (C–range) content. Outstanding presentation comprises clearly articulated and well organized points, ideally with no more than a handful of honest writing mistakes. A–range work must also meet relevant structural requirements, including proper citation formatting. (Slightly lower writing standards may apply for non–native English speakers.)
I'll use a rubric to evaluate each paper and email you a grade report when it's ready. Each completed form should give you enough information to know why you received the grade you did, but you should let me know if you have any questions or concerns about my assessment.
Papers that don't meet stated requirements and expectations are subject to a score reduction or other penalty, to be levied at my discretion. Papers submitted without (both) parenthetical citations and a reference list may be refused and assigned a score of zero.
